I am the youngest of 8 children (6 girls, 2 boys) raised by Dorris Parkins and the late Bob Parkins. My name came naturally to my father because he was so excited to have his second son after 5 straight girls, which to him was a big Victory—thus the name.
I am a life long resident of Milan, or Graball as many know it. My parents raised us all in the Sitka Church of Christ where I still attend worship today.
I am a 1987 graduate of Milan High School and a 1991 graduate of the University of Tennessee with a degree in business administration. After college, I went to work for the family business, the Mirror-Exchange Newspaper—and I have been there since.
There is no other place in the world I want to live. I love my hometown and the people in it.
I try to give back when I can, so I’ve served on the boards of the Milan girls softball league and the Milan Agriculture Museum. I am a past President of the Milan Lions Club and have helped raised over $50,000 to purchase prescription eyeglasses for the less fortunate right here in the 38358 area code. I am a Past President of the Milan Chamber of Commerce as well as the Milan Alumni Association. Professionally, I am President and co-owner (with my sister, Scarlet) of Gibson County Publishing which includes the Milan Mirror-Exchange, the Trenton Herald Gazette, The Humboldt Chronicle and the Tri-City Reporter in Dyer. Our company co-owns Associated Publishers, Inc. in Huntingdon where some of our newspapers are printed.
I am very active in the state’s newspaper association, currently serving as President of the Tennessee Press Association Foundation. Our mission is to recruit aspiring journalist into our industry and to help fund literacy programs across the state. I am also a past President of the Tennessee Press Association and the Tennessee Press Service, both of which offer support to Tennessee’s 128 newspapers.
I am married to Carol Putman Parkins, formerly of Mckenzie. I have two beautiful daughters, Jordan, 29, and Holly, 18. I’m also owner of the prettiest, smartest black Labrador in the world, Jane.
When I am not working at the newspaper, I enjoy dabbling in real estate, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
